La Liga started off with a whimper. There were only 12 goals scored the entire weekend. One of those goals was this beauty from Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann.
Atletico looked good and did come away with the crucial three points at home, but the bigger story was how strong Las Palmas and many other teams looked over the weekend. Las Palmas didn’t appear to be intimidated at all by Atletico and at times looked to be the better squad.
Sporting Gijon looked promising against Real Madrid and deserved the 0-0 draw. Barcelona beat Atletico Bilboa but it was a hard earned and tough 1-0 victory, which was also a big achievement for Barca considering their embarrassing loss to Bilbao in the Super Copa.
Fans want to see goals, but sometimes, the lack of goals is a good thing. It could mean that there is more parity and less dominance at the top.
I’d still bet my house on those three teams finishing at the top of the table. That still seems certain despite the results from the first weekend. But there might not be as great of distance between the three at the top and rest of the table, which would only make for a better and more enjoyable season.
